31st August 1878

 

Abstract of title to freehold dwellinghouse No: 81, Eastbourne Terrace, Gainsborough in the County of Lincoln.

An indenture was made on 1st May 1877 between Thomas Wright – a builder from Lincoln - and Messrs Oldman and Iveson, whereby £1,000 plus 5% per annum was paid for –

 

Two parcels of land containing 1903 square yards together with all those messuages and dwellinghouses then being erected or built thereon.

 

8th June 1877: a further £350 plus 5% per annum was paid by Messrs Oldman and Iveson to T. Wright.

 

24th August 1877: a further £1350 plus 5% per annum was paid by Messrs Oldman and Iveson to T. Wright.

 

Thomas Wright had agreed with Henry Newsum and Henry Marshall for the absolute sale to them of the land and buildings at the price of £2925 agreeing to put glass in the windows and doors and complete the paths belonging thereunto. 

 

24th June 1878:  T. Wright went into liquidation and it was agreed that H. Newsum and H. Marshall should pay Messrs Oldman and Iveson the sum of £2817 12s 3d and £97 7s 9d should go to George Jay as accountant.

 

‘The said T. H. Oldman and A. Iveson by the direction of the said G. Jay did thereby grant and the said G. Jay did thereby grant and confirm unto the said H. Newsum and H. D. Marshall and their heirs:

 

All those eight messuages and dwellinghouses in Gainsborough aforesaid adjoining each other and known as Eastbourne Terrace with the yards, gardens and outbuildings thereunto and adjoining and belonging bounded on the East by Prospect Street, on the West by Trinity Street, on the North by a messuage or dwellinghouse belonging to Charles Marshall and on the South by a four foot passage.

Together with all the apartments.

And all the estate thereunto.

To hold unto the said H. Newsum and H. D. Marshall and their heirs as one undivided moiety thereof.’

 

 31st August 1878

 

Agreement between H. Newsum and Henry D. Marshall and Mary Beckett of Somerby Park, spinster, whereby she lent £2500 to Messrs Newsum and Marshall for ‘ all the property as listed above’ to the use of said M. Beckett and her heirs forever subject to the proviso for redemption of the mortgage granted.

28th October 1889

 

Agreement between M. Beckett as mortgagee and H. Newsum and H. D. Marshall had been paid.

 

31st October 1889

 

H. Newsum and H. D. Marshall had an advance for shares from the Second Gainsborough Building Society of £2574 7s 6d in exchange for ‘all the property as listed above’.  Messrs Newsum and Marshall could ‘ hold and enjoy the properties and receive rents and profits thereof so long as they paid the sums of money asked from the Society from time to time.  (With the proviso this should be every month and not to fail in payment for longer than 3 consecutive months otherwise the society would have power to sell the premises to regain the monies owing.)

 

25th August 1899

 

Henry Newsum, esquire and Justice of the Peace wrote his will.

His will stated that his real and personal estates should be sold advantageously by his sons.

 


12th November 1902

 

Henry Dickenson Marshall, engineer of Gainsborough wrote his will.

His will also stated that his estates should be converted into money to settle his funeral expenses and debts and he made his wife Mary Ann Marshall, his brother James Marshall, his sons Percy James Marshall and Hermann Dickenson Marshall and his friend Edward Thomas Moore a solicitor of Sheffield, his executors and trustees.

 

16th January 1903

Percy James Marshall was removed as an executor from H. Marshall’s will.

 

10th September 1904

Henry Newsum died.

 

8th March 1906

Henry Dickenson Marshall died.

For the sum of £425 the purchase of 81, Eastbourne Terrace, Trinity Street, Gainsborough, currently occupied by Mrs Duncan as tenant.

 

5th January 1934

W. E. Smith of Greystoke, Lea, borrowed money on his share from the Gainsborough Building Society to the sum of £466 13s 4d.

 

At the time Mr. Stanley Algar was tenant.

 


7th November 1947

Assent

 

Stanley Algar died 2nd October 1952 and the house passed to his wife Violet Algar.

 

8th June 1956

Violet Algar died in St. George’s Hospital, Lincoln.  The house passed to Lloyd’s Bank of London as trustees.

Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson, wife of Joseph Atkinson of 42, Marlborough Street, Gainsborough, a British Railways porter.

Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson exchanged 81, Eastbourne Terrace with Mrs. Ethel Humphrey for 67, Eastbourne Terrace.
