The
Baines Family
Cycle
and Motor Manufacturers
In
1857, William Baines took over Marshall’s old premises in North Street and
began the commercial repair of boneshaker bicycles.
In 1868 Frank Baines (possibly William's brother) of the Old Hall built ‘an iron machine’.
Frank and Edward built a rear-driven safety bicycle in 1887. It had a small front wheel and a dished chain wheel.

In
1888 they built a tandem and in 1889 William Baines constructed a ladies safety
bicycle that was ridden by his sister. They
also introduced the cushioned tyre.
In 1890 Edward Baines rode the first pneumatic tyred bicycle in Lincolnshire. In 1896 they established a competition to build the Aegir Bicycle but there was a sales slump and this didn’t reach a conclusion.

In 1901 Edward Baines joined with William Rose to design and build a car at the Albion Works. The firm was one of Dunlop’s first 20 customers.

Frank
Baines, Esmond Bates and Mark Woodcock brought the
Mary Gordon to Lincoln
in 1943. The boat was missing
windows and doors and Frank Baines added these and a new deck canopy.
For annual maintenance, Frank Baines constructed a slipway on the side of
the Fossebank.

The
Mary Gordon took parties of up to 36 passengers between Gainsborough,
Lincoln and Boston - wherever they wished to go.
The
Mary Gordon electric riverboat is the oldest electrically powered craft
still in existence and can be found at the Pyewipe inn on the Fossdyke Canal.
